SYNOPSIS:
Based on the book Infamous Mothers by Sagashus T. Levingston, this play brings to life true stories of incredibly strong women who “went through the belly of hell and brought something good back.” This beautifully told piece weaves powerful theatre by interposing Levingston’s own remarkable story with the stories of six real-life women from her book and four fictional women who represent the struggles and triumphs of all marginalized women.
SETTING:
America. The Midwest. 2018. The stage is divided into two playing areas:
- Sagashus Levingston’s work space in her home: a kitchen table, stacked with papers, and crowded with children’s toys and a basket of unfolded laundry.
- An intimate, well-furnished living room in a modern home, belonging to a successful older woman named Idara.
CAST: 5 Women; 1 child
Sagashus Levingston, 40s, black
Yemi, a teenage girl, black, a powerful vocalist
Akeesha, 20s, black - recently homeless, now living at the YWCA
Joretta, 30s, black - ex-con, working on her GED, hoping to be a nurse
Max, 40s, white - lesbian, recovering addict, struggling entrepreneur
Idara, 60s, black - survivor, community leader, professor emeritus
